At the litter acceptance at 8 weeks of age, the puppies receive their first vaccination and their chip, which is unique in the world and after registration with Tasso e.V., the chip can be traced back to the owner if, for example, the dog has run away. The puppies also receive a health certificate, a copy of which is given to our buyers on collection.

The vaccination site and the chip may initially disturb the puppy. On the first day it usually hurts when you touch them, so please don’t be surprised if they squeal when you touch them at 12 weeks. Another reaction can be an inoculation knot and, above all, increased itching/scratching. We hear that very often after delivery.

Of course, it can also be an act of jumping out of insecurity or stress. Sometimes it’s just because the hair isn’t lying properly 🙂 and of course it can also be fleas and the like. But immediately after delivery it will probably be due to the vaccination, so don’t be surprised.

The dates for the next vaccinations can always be found in the EU pet passport. The pet passport is like a kind of identity card for the dog, it has a number on each page that can be traced back to the vet. It also contains the chip number, which begins with 276, the identifier for Germany. This way, if you lose your phone abroad, you know that you should first search for the owner in the German database. Therefore all our puppies are registered via Tasso e.V. in Germany. For puppies going abroad, we strongly recommend that they are also registered with the relevant office in their home country.

A worming treatment should be given 2-3 days before the next vaccination. Please only take worming treatments from the vet. All over-the-counter products are ineffective, even if they are often promised otherwise.

However, rabies should only be vaccinated from the 16th week, even if many vets are happy to do it from the 12th week.

If the dog is vaccinated against rabies at 12 weeks of age, this vaccination is only valid for 4 weeks and must be repeated at 16 weeks of age. If the rabies vaccination is given at 16 weeks at the earliest, the vaccination is normally valid for 3 years. A vaccination at 12 weeks is only important for animals that want to travel to EU countries at 15 weeks. e.g. in the case of a sale to the Netherlands. A valid rabies vaccination means that it must be at least 21 days old before the start of the journey.

A puppy, regardless of size, receives the same amount of vaccine as an adult dog of a large dog breed. You should bear that in mind. The rabies vaccination can cause a vaccination reaction, e.g. through a swelling, a so-called vaccination nodule, which can still be palpable and painful for up to 6 weeks.

A dog vaccinated against rabies is in a better legal position than an unvaccinated dog. If a dog comes into contact with an animal that has been proven to have rabies, it will be killed immediately by the police / hunter / veterinarian / veterinary office. Unless he can provide proof of a valid rabies vaccination, the dog has the right to be quarantined.

Remember that puppies still have milk teeth and these can fall out from the 20th week. Usually the incisors are the first, 6 of them like ours. What you should pay attention to are the canine teeth, which can be quite firmly attached in small dogs and do not fall out on their own. When the permanent tooth comes in, it can appear in front of the milk tooth in the row or on the inside right next to the milk tooth. The following can happen: In the first variant, the incisors can shift and a misalignment of the incisors could occur. With the second variant it is more problematic, if the milk tooth is firmly in place, the permanent tooth will grow too far in and they would bite into the flesh later. Milk teeth are smaller in size than permanent teeth. They have a sharp tip and only a narrow root. This should actually dissolve and then the milk tooth should fall out. But it doesn’t always work with small dogs, which means you have to have the milk tooth extracted so that the permanent tooth can slide into the right position.
