Transport options and dog crates

The subject of dog crates is explained very well in an article from 8/2006 in “Das deutsche Hundemagazin”. The article can be found as a PDF file on the DVD under “Education”.

Is a dog crate really useful? Clearly, a dog crate is perfect as a retreat for your puppy and adult dog and is also good for safety. The crate also has various educational benefits.

With us, the puppy has already got to know the box in the run and has a positive memory of it. Of course, it’s best when the box and blanket have already been used by us and the puppy can take something familiar with him to his new home.

We are always happy to recommend the Skudo IATA in sizes 1 to 3 from Nobby.

The price-performance ratio of the box convinced us.

When the puppy moves in with you, it is not used to sleeping all by itself. The easiest thing to do is to take the crate into the bedroom in the evening and let the puppy sleep there. If you do not want to have a dog in the bedroom, then you should sleep where the puppy is supposed to sleep. It will take a few days for the puppy to get used to sleeping alone.

Normally our puppies sleep 6 hours through the night when they are handed over. If the puppy whines at night, first put your hand through the gate and see if he calms down again. Please do NOT talk to the puppy. If he does not calm down, he may have to go wee-wee after all. Take him out of the box in your arms and carry him to where you want him to relieve himself. Also now: Do NOT talk to the puppy or praise him. Put him back in his box without comment. The dog becomes house-trained more quickly with a box, no dog likes to soil its “nest”! Without a box, he would wander around at night………………

If you start talking to your puppy at night, he will quickly demand this attention from you more often and your nights will become shorter and shorter………..

During the day, the puppy also has an important resting place in the crate, where it can retreat whenever it wants. With a puppy in particular, you should make sure that he can rest from time to time. Especially in a family with children, this is very difficult for young dogs because there is always action.

The puppy still needs a lot of sleep and must learn to switch off from time to time. Make the box appealing to the puppy with treats. If he has a beef ear to chew on, for example, he will be calm and occupied. It can be very unpleasant for everyone if the dog is constantly overexcited and can’t calm down.

With the box, you gradually learn to leave him alone. Distracted by his treats, he often doesn’t even notice that you’ve left the room and he’s alone.

For dogs, being left alone in an apartment is a stress factor that should not be underestimated. The desire to protect their territory is inherent in every dog and the greater the space the dog has in the home, the greater the stress for the dog. The crate creates the opportunity for the dog to calm down and feel safe.

Keeping your puppy in the crate also avoids the dangers to which he is exposed when he is alone in an apartment (electric cables etc.). If you really don’t have time for your friend, you can safely put him in the crate for 1-2 hours. This makes it easy to run errands.

Alternatively, there is of course also the option of a kind of playpen. Here the space that the puppy can use is larger and you can even put water and food inside. Whether you should buy a dog crate or a playpen is entirely up to you, both are equally suitable for training.

This sets boundaries for the puppy, which is very important for training and keeping.

You can also comfortably take your puppy with you in the car, a puppy that has become accustomed to being in a crate early on does not mind. On the contrary, it gives him a feeling of security because he doesn’t roll around as he might with a seatbelt. It is also mandatory to secure dogs in the car. But please don’t leave the puppy alone in the car, it’s either too cold or often too hot in the car.

Dogs do not perceive a smaller sleeping area as a prison, but as a safe place. The box becomes a basket and a place of safety.

Even if you go on vacation, you can always take the safe place with you for your dog, so he always has his familiar cave with him and feels comfortable.

The boxes are also very suitable for visits to the vet. If your dog gets sick, the plastic can be easily cleaned and disinfected.

If you are going for a walk by car, it is also much more comfortable to transport your muddy dog in a plastic box. Dogs are often wet and dirty after a long walk in the woods.

This is a leash with a safety belt for the car. The dog could then sit quite freely on the back seat or the passenger seat.

Of course, there are also large transport boxes made of fabric, which are also foldable. However, as puppies often try to get out of the box at the beginning and scratch from the inside, the fabric boxes are not so suitable. They can quickly be damaged by claws and sharp teeth.

The Transformers 3 in 1 Amelia bag from Nobby is also very pretty as a transport bag for restaurants and other occasions. Puppy buyers drew our attention to it in 2019 because they were so enthusiastic about it. You can use it as a bag and also as a bed. Also a nice idea J

A carrier bag like this is also very practical during puppyhood. You can fold the bag very small and put it in your handbag. This way you have a way of transporting your puppy with you in an emergency. For longer walks or a Christmas market or shopping center. If you get them used to it, they will sit in it perfectly J If necessary, even in a restaurant.
